Robert SunBear:

“I was born in Yuba City, California. I grew up on Pine Ridge Reservation and I am Oglala Lakota/Sioux. My great-great-grandfather is Ben Black Elk. When my mother met my father he was in the Air Force and we moved around a lot. Off and on, we would return to the reservation where life was very hard. I attended elementary school in Manderson, SD and middle school in Rockyford, SD where I learned leather craft and became interested in working with hand tools. Eventually, my family and I moved to Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, SD, where I attended Douglas High School.”

“During this time, my brother was working with some of the Black Hills Gold Jewelry. I worked for Riddles Jewelry for eight years when I met a fellow Native American who was making his own Lakota Jewelry. When I saw the methods he used and the heart that was put into the pieces, I felt I could also honor my culture and my people by creating silver jewelry of my own. I would love to be able to teach this beautiful work to my children or others who would be sincerely willing to learn. Sometimes the work is hard. But often rewarding when you look back and see what you created with your own hands.”

“Some of the materials I use for this would be stones such as malachite, pipestone, sandstone, abalone, mother-of-pearl and lapis, just to name a few. In metal, I use sterling silver, nickel silver, yellow and read brass, also known as jeweler’s gold. All the jewelry is hand-made. I do have on special helper, my beautiful wife, ‘Skye Blue Looks Twice,’ also an Oglala Lakota/Sioux.”
